CAPTAIN FANTASTIC - SKIPPER SENDS RACA TO THE SEMIS CAPTAIN FANTASTIC - SKIPPER SENDS RACA TO THE SEMIS

RACA 1-0 Redcar Athletic

Scott Jasper bagged his 19th goal of the season to fire RACA into the semi-final of the EAM Cup and get The Albion back to winning ways.

The captain’s 48th-minute breakthrough was enough to see out a 1-0 win over promotion rivals Redcar Athletic in a closely fought battle at Kingsley Park.

Both sides went into the game 2nd and 3rd place in the league, and if January’s encounter was anything to go by when both sides played out a 1-1 draw, this EAM cup clash was always going to be a tight affair.

A lacklustre first-half saw little to no action, with most of the game being fought in midfield and neither side being able to get a grip on the game and create a clear chance on goal.

The highlight of the half was the battle emerging between RACA full-back Jack Moody and Redcar winger Gary Redman.

Moody made his presence known with a few solid challenges and he was probably RACA’s stand-out performer in the opening 45 minutes, however, Redman did beat his man on one occasion to whip in a vicious cross but nobody was on the end of it.

The game sprung to life after the break, as the home side were now playing with a lot more energy and clearly looking to make things happen by getting on the front foot.

This pressure paid off on 48 minutes when a long ball from right-back David Below was played towards Scott Jasper.

The cross bounced between Redcar’s two centre-halves and goalkeeper Will Lawrence was caught in no man’s land as to whether he should clear the ball or stay on his line.

Before he could make up his mind RACA skipper Jasper improvised a beautifully lofted header over Lawrence to give the home side the advantage.

Redcar forced The Albion to dig in and grind out the victory for the remainder of the game, with goalkeeper David Hansen making a string of saves to keep his clean sheet in-tact.

Quick-fire stops from Redman and Rivas from close range were met with cheers from the home dugout before away skipper Michael Woodhouse clipped the outside of the post to increase the anxiety levels around Kingsley Park.

The dying seconds of the game saw Hansen make his best save yet. A deflected pass put Adam Preston through and the linesman’s flag stayed down, but the RACA goalkeeper charged forward to deny the winger 1 on 1.

The whistle blew shortly after and The Albion are back to winning ways - booking an EAM Cup last 4 spot in the process.
