Scott Jasper netted a brace as Ryton & Crawcrook Albion booked their place in the last 16 of the Mitre Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup on Tuesday with an impressive 2-0 win at Ashington.
Knowing a victory in the final group game would guarantee a place in the knockout rounds, manager Tony Fawcett named a strong starting line-up for the clash, despite making seven changes to the side that won 2-0 at Washington on Saturday.
It would have been eight changes but a late reshuffle to the starting line-up meant Josh Graham kept his place in goal, replacing Philip Holgate who had to drop out due to illness. But that did not disrupt Fawcett’s men and the visitors made the perfect start at Woodhorn Lane, going ahead inside five minutes when Jasper opened the scoring with a diving header from a Jack Cooper corner.
In what was a confident first half display, Ryton could have had a bigger lead to take into the break with the returning Mitchell Ramsay going close and young Daniel Blewitt rattling the underside of the bar with an effort from over 20 yards.
Requiring a win, Ashington increased the pressure in the second half, creating several half chances, but the hosts rarely troubled J Graham while the rest of team stopped anything that was thrown their way.
And they were rewarded for their hard work as Jasper sealed the win with a brilliant effort in the closing stages - running onto a James Thompson ball from his own half to coolly dink over the onrushing goalkeeper.
The three points secures Ryton second spot in Group C and means they join group winners West Allotment Celtic in progressing to the last 16 ahead of the pre-tournament favourites from the Northern League’s top tier – Ashington and Stockton Town.
The result also extends Albion’s winning and clean sheet run to 5 matches in all competitions.
On Saturday, it's back to the league as in-form Heaton Stannington visit Kingsley Park in a clash of 3rd v 4th.
