The lads travelled to Woodhorn Lane knowing that only a win would be enough to see them progress to the knockout stages of the competition...
October 15, 2019 - Ashington 0-2 RACA
RACA went into this BMM League Cup tie looking to make it five wins on the bounce in all competitions but still remained huge underdogs for the trip to Division One side Ashington.
The Colliers were on a tear of their own by winning three in a row prior to this clash, including a ruthless 10-1 triumph over Esh Winning in this very competition.
A glimpse of the match programme ahead of the BMM League Cup tie.
A win guaranteed qualification into the knockout rounds and Albion had already claimed the huge scalp of Stockton Town in their previous BBM League Cup fixture, with Liam Barker and Dan Blewitt bagging in another surprise 2-0 win.
Ex-RACA boss Tony Fawcett named a strong line-up to try and grab the victory despite making seven changes to the side that beat Washington 2-0 just a few days earlier.
Here is how we lined up on that incredible night at Woodhorn Lane:
J Graham, Sherrard, Dobson, Turnbull, Shepherd, R Graham, Norris, Cooper (Anderson 78), Jasper, Blewitt (Davis 72), Ramsay (Thompson 60).
A few of the lads warming up ahead of that crucial clash back in October 2019.
Former captain Scott Jasper ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides as his double fired RACA into the knockout rounds and put Ashington to the sword.
Albion took an early lead inside five minutes when the skipper converted a diving header from a Jack Cooper corner to give the boys the perfect start for their task ahead.
New boy Mitchell Ramsay came close and Dan Blewitt rattled the underside of the bar with a long-range effort as their dominance at half-time was only being reflected with a one-goal advantage on the scoreline.
Pre-match favourites Ashington looked took control in the second-half as they pressed for an equaliser but they faced an Albion side that had not conceded a goal in four games - and it showed.
Tony Fawcett’s men dug deep and clinched the game with a late strike to seal progression into the knockout rounds.
James Thompson slotted through Jasper on the halfway line, who then ran the whole of the opposition half before coolly dinking his effort over the hapless goalkeeper to send the away dugout into a state of pure elation.
Scott Jasper netted his 6th & 7th goals of the 2019/20 campaign in our 2-0 win.
One of our stand-out games from last season, this result sent us on our way to the semi-finals of the competition. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fixture against West Allotment Celtic was never played but the memories from this game will live with the Albion supporters for a long time.
