There were big wins for Ashington and Newcastle University in the FA Vase's first qualifying round this weekend...
The Buildbase FA Vase kicked off on the weekend and our clash with Ashington was eyed as one of the ones to watch in the build-up to the first round of qualifying fixtures.
Unfortunately for us, our spirited efforts to pull the game back to 2-2 were in vain as a late Ashington double sunk our FA Vase hopes for another season. Lee Richardson and Owen Brearton bagged their first goals for the club - news that helps draw some positives from the defeat.
Elsewhere in the competition north-west based Nelson travelled to Carlisle and turned them over in a thrilling 5-3 win at Gillford Park. Seb Julien scored the fifth and displayed a man of the match performance to put the Sky Blues to the sword.
The biggest shock of the day took place at Hillheads Park as Whitley Bay succumbed to a surprise 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle University.
Ex-RACA boss Tony Fawcett suffered the surprise defeat to lower league opposition after another former Albion man, Jamie Dunn, had drawn the Seahorses level from the penalty spot in the first half.
There was plenty of drama throughout the afternoon on a day which saw three fixtures go to penalties. Jarrow, Birtley Town and Penrith got the rub of the green in their respective shoot-outs to dump out Steeton, Squires Gate and West Allotment Celtic respectively.
