Round-up of results on the opening day of the 20/21 campaign, with big wins for Crook Town and Willington the key talking points...
Results weekly round-up - Week One
It was an excellent opening week of the season for Crook Town as they were victorious in their preliminary FA Cup qualifying round while also going top of the Northern League Division 2 with a 3-0 win over Redcar Athletic.
Manager Jamie Tunstall’s side put in a dominant display on home soil to sink Redcar and claim an early foothold at the top of the table after dumping Yorkshire Amateurs out of the world's oldest football competition on penalties in midweek.
The big talking point of the day was Sunderland West End’s fixture with Chester-le-Street being called off due to a player testing positive for COVID-19 - reminding us all of the challenges we all face going forward this season.
It was a disappointing opening weekend from our point of view as we tasted defeat in Mark Bullock’s first game in charge, with a late strike from Mackenzie Sharpe being enough to put the Albion to the sword.
The most entertaining pick of the bunch was Willington’s epic 4-3 win over Durham City, who had been billed as potential title contenders in pre-season after bringing in Celtic legend Didier Agatha as manager.
Summer addition D’Andre Wainwright had an impressive debut as he opened the scoring in the first minute and went on to bag a hat-trick but his efforts ended up being in vain as Willo held on for a deserved win.
Elsewhere there was another exciting game taking place at West Terrace as Esh Winning came from behind to beat Brandon United thanks to a double from forward Jay McLean.
